Women Against War’s Afghan Project advocates to end completely the US military occupation of Afghanistan – soldiers, special forces, drones and private contractors. Instead, we call for US reparations, development and regional diplomacy. In December of 2013 we updated our project name to Beyond Afghanistan/No Drones Project to better reflect our work against weaponized drones and drone killings in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen. In December of 2017 we updated it again to describe our current work. The new name is Pathways to Peace
Women Against War’s education and advocacy work to end the Afghan War began in November 2008 after the inspiring visit of Fahima Vorgetts, the Afghan-American director of the Afghan Women’s Fund. Since then our Afghan Project committee has met monthly to organize:
Speakers and exhibits about Afghanistan for the community, - Demonstrations to focus public attention on the continuing war,
- Repeated lobbying of our Congresspeople and their staff to end the war, and
- Fund-raising for an Afghan-led clean water and education project for the village of Mir Taqi Shah, a model for replacing military occupation with development.

Schedule Connie Frisbee Houde to speak in your class or community group: an Albany photojournalist and member of the Afghan Project who traveled to Afghanistan 5 times between 2003 and 2010. - Join us to lobby Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Congressmen Tonko and Gibson.
- Volunteer to table with materials on Afghanistan at community events.
- Sign and circulate our petition on the role of military contractors in prolonging the Afghan War.
- Join our Afghan Project committee to plan upcoming events.
- Check your community’s share of the cost of the Afghan War and tell your friends.
- Donate to help us pay for speakers, literature, buttons, etc.
Past Activities
- December 10, 2012: Organized International Human Rights Day Fast and Vigil for an Afghan Ceasefire in support of fasters in Afghanistan and at the UN
- October 3, 2012: Participated in 11th Anniversary of Afghan War Vigil and Speak-out
August 16, 2012: Organized The Afghan Peace Volunteers’ 2 Million Friends Campaign: an Evening with Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence.- Summer 2012: Leafleted and petitioned at festivals and farmers markets on role of military contractors in promoting continued Afghan war.
- February 22 and March 27, 2012: Lobbied Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for a US unilateral ceasefire in Afghanistan.
October 12 – November 11, 2011: Scheduled Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan, an American Friends Service Committee exhibit of 25 large murals. Schedule included displays at the NYS Legislative Office Building, Skidmore College with speaker Ed Kinane, Sage College with speaker Helen Benedict, College of St Rose with panel of faculty speakers, Union College and Proctors International Gallery. Extensive media coverage.
