Statement by Women Against War
Presented to Representatives in Congress:

NO WAR ON IRAN

Women Against War is meeting with you today to discuss the Bush administration’s saber rattling in preparation for possible military action against Iran. We believe that no justification currently exists for any form of military action against Iran.

We are here as concerned women to make our voices heard in opposition to any impending military action against Iran.  According to numerous experts, a war with Iran will only produce catastrophic results.

We feel a deep sense of horror at news reports of the Bush administration’s planned options for bombing Iran, possibly even using nuclear weapons.  We do not want innocent women, children, and other civilians to die in a preventable war.

We were misled into the war in Iraq and we will not be misled into a war with Iran.  We are alarmed about the reports of increased U.S. clandestine activities inside Iran and the planning of a possible major attack.

Myths and falsehoods are being used to justify the invasion of yet another sovereign nation.  This is deeply troubling to us and we feel it is of the utmost importance to present ___(Senator Schumer, Senator Clinton, Representative Gillibrand, or Representative McNulty) with a list of demands we trust ___ will address.   We would like ___ to respond to these concerns. We want to hear how ___ will act in Congress to address each of these steps necessary to prevent military escalation against Iran.

These are the demands of Women Against War regarding NO WAR ON IRAN. We want to know that ___ will take the following actions:

  • Take leadership in Congress to impede President
Bush in continuing, and initiating, military
and threatening actions against Iran without first

    obtaining authorization from Congress.

  • Support Congressional action to prohibit funding
approved by any Congressional act from being used
to take military action against Iran without first
obtaining explicit authorization from Congress, and
clarifying that no previously enacted law authorizes

    military action against Iran.

  • Support S. Res. 39 in the Senate and H. Con. Res. 33 and H.J. Res. 14 in
the House of Representatives (see attachments).

  • Advocate diplomatic and not military engagement with Iran.
We demand that the Bush administration commence
    unconditional diplomatic dialogue with Iran.

  • Urge the immediate reduction of the provocative
U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf and of U.S.
support for confrontational military and other
    destabilizing operations in Iranian territory.
Deny Congressional support and funding for these
    activities.

  • Support U.S. efforts to build people-to-people ties
between Americans and Iranians, including working
with the Iranian community in the United States.

  • Encourage Congressional support for a WMD-Free
    and Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone throughout
    the Middle East.

Above all we wish to prevent a military attack on Iran, a growing, vibrant nation with the majority of the population under 30 years of age.
