Women Against War Co-Sponsorship of Some Fall Season 2008 Events at The Sanctuary for Independent Media

Women Against War has been co-sponsoring selected events at The Sanctuary for Independent Media for the past several years. We try to choose events that educate or stimulate discussion and action about our core values of peace, non-violence and justice for all. Since it's The Sanctuary these themes are often handled in surprising, imaginative, multisensory ways.

One of the contributions that we make to support these events is publicizing them on our website and our listserve. We also try to help by attending, tabling, assisting with tasks of the evening and contributing to potlucks when they are part of the evening programs.

This fall we've agreed to co-sponsor five events:

  1. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
Opening of the Iraqi children's art exchange, with curator Claudia Lefko, AND 7 PM Body of War w/ filmmaker Dee Dee Halleck

This event was also preceded by a potluck at 6 PM. Featured speakers after the film included Tyler Boudreau, A Marine Officer who left the service after serving in Iraq and who wrote the book, Packing Inferno: The Unmaking of a Marine and Denise Figueroa, director of the Center for Independent Living.

  2. 7 PM FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10
    Seth Tobocman

Disaster and Resistance, Comics for the 21st Century. Multimedia presentation with guitarist and drummer, Steve Wishnia and Eric Blitz.

  3. 7 PM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16
A Jihad for Love w/ filmmaker Parvez Sharma

An exploration of the intersection of homosexuality and Islam by gay filmmaker and practicing Muslim, Parvez Sharma. Covers 12 different countries and 9 languages.

  4. 7 PM TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28
Iraq veteran and jailed war resister, Camilo Mejía

"Road from ar Ramadi: The Private Rebellion of Staff Sergeant Carlos Mejia"

  5. 7 PM SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16

Eliza Gilkyson, well known folk singer with emphasis on themes of peace and justice, and Bob Jensen, Professor of Journalism at The University of Texas at Austin and author on the topics of foreign policy, U.S power, and race and gender. This tour is a combination of speaking and musical performance.
