The project advocates for US policy to support the needs of the 5 million Iraqis displaced by the war. The project also welcomes and supports Iraqi refugees resettling in the Capital District and works with the Iraqi Student Project to bring refugee students to the area to attend local colleges. Among other activities, they are trying to identify Iraqi refugees with family ties to the Capital District and share their stories. They are also working to reunite Iraqi refugees with their local family members, raise funds to support their material needs, and work with the Iraqi Student Project to bring students to the area and help them attend local colleges.
Iran Project Meeting:
The project was started in the spring of 2007 to work for negotiations and diplomacy with Iran and to prevent military engagement by the United States government. We accomplish this work through, billboards, media work, banner and leaflet creation, vigils and demonstrations, lobbying of congressional representatives and as many creative and passionate approaches as we can muster. New project members are always welcome.
Grannies For Peace Meeting:
Grannies for Peace is a local Capital District Organization that began as a project of Women Against War with our first Grannies Action at the local Albany military recruiting office, in Colonie Center, on February 14, 2006. Some of us are actual grannies, and some of us are just "women of a certain age" who could be grannies and care about creating a more peaceful world for our young people. Much of our work involves creative props and costumes to catch the attention of the media and the public. Since the winter of 2006 we have vigiled each year on Mother's Day weekend, and on Valentine's Day. We have ongoing projects focusing on health care for returning veterans, counterrecruitment, and on the safety of children of the Capital District.
