Remembering the Fallen March

Women Against War joined other peace groups to sponsor a Remembering the Fallen March on March 18, 2007, to mark the Iraq War’s 4th anniversary. Participants signed up in advance to carry the name of one of the more than 3,700 US soldiers who have died in Iraq, learning about their individual lives and the terrible loss of these deaths.

A huge crowd, estimated by Channel 10 as 3000 persons, gathered for a rally in front of the NYS Capitol and a march to the Federal Building.

WAW activist, Maureen Aumand, came up with this powerful idea of honoring each lost life and spoke for WAW at the rally. A huge banner reminded us all that over 650,000 Iraqis gave died since the US invasion.

To bring the day’s message into a residential neighborhood, we organized a WAW Feeder March through the Mansion Hill area. 70 WAW members, friends and family walked in silence, in pairs, dressed in black and carrying our names to symbolize our mourning. Contingents form WAW’s project, Grannies for Peace, and the Muslim Solidarity Committee, which WAW strongly supports added to the power of the Feeder March.
